Role Overview
Reporting to the General Manager of the Service Department, you will be part of the team of technicians responsible for accurately diagnosing and repairing customers’ HVAC equipment and courteously interacting with the customer. AMSI offers mechanical construction service for large commercial and multi-family buildings, specializing in Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems and conventional HVAC systems. The Service Department offers long-term preventive maintenance services as well as breakdown repairs.

Role Details
As one of our team of 9 Commercial HVAC Service Technicians, you’ll maintain, repair, and calibrate our commercial customers’ HVAC systems, replacing various components such as transformers, thermostats and compressors, and also replacing complete systems. You will diagnose problems, explain these to customers in clear, non-technical terms, relay costs to customers, and offer alternatives. You will order and obtain parts once the customer gives approval and communicate with the field supervisor regarding challenges.

You’ll spend most of your time on preventative maintenance on existing commercial equipment (filter changes, cleanings, making recommendations), troubleshooting existing systems that are having problems, repairing and replacing commercial HVAC equipment, completing emergency service, and ultimately will need to write everything up clearly in a service report. You’ll work both on new construction jobs (servicing and starting up new equipment) as well as commercial service and retrofit. This will mean you’ll need to switch gears quickly depending on the needs of the job, and the nature of our business means we stay busy all year long.

Typically you’ll work M-F 7am – 3pm, but you may start work as early as 6am anywhere in the DC Metro area, and you’ll need to be flexible to occasionally work overtime depending on business needs. You’ll be on an on-call rotation for a week at a time every couple of months or so, and you may be asked to work after hours, over weekends and on public holidays with short or no notice. You'll be driving to job sites every day using a company-provided service vehicle, which you’ll also drive home at night, so you’ll need to have a valid license, clean driving record, and the ability to park the vehicle safely overnight.

Some of your specific tasks will include:
  • Cleaning, adjusting and repairing HVAC systems, and performing warranty services.
  • Installing new heating, cooling, and ventilation systems.
  • Troubleshooting defective HVAC systems and equipment to make diagnoses.
  • Performing preventative maintenance by cleaning reheat coils and air handling units, and monitoring and calibrating air handling units.
  • Conducting performance tests with specialized tools.
  • Improving air quality by cleaning ducts to optimize efficiency.
  • Fixing, replacing and adjusting vents and ductwork.
  • Ensuring condensation drain line is free of debris and draining properly.
  • Performing emergency repairs promptly and efficiently.
  • Keeping daily logs and records of maintenance functions.
  • Following Company safety guidelines, and ensuring compliance with appliance standards and with the Health and Safety Act.
  • Maintaining service truck.
Note: this description is intended to give you a general overview of the position and is not an exhaustive listing of duties and responsibilities.
