You will act as a key advisor to the President and will have responsibility for the financial reporting and projections for this highly regarded regional middle-market mechanical construction services organization. You'll be responsible for developing an annual budget, providing financial forecasts and for directing financial reporting, accounting and administrative services, insurance and bonding, and staff. In addition, you'll provide external lenders, bonding and insurance entities with relevant information in a timely manner.

This is not a "scorekeeper" accounting position. You'll share the responsibility for the profitable growth of the company. We'll look to you to create an environment in the organization that fosters a mindset focused on profitability, growth, cash flow and risk mitigation. Quick question for you - click here

You'll take over a team that includes two Staff Accountants, an AR Specialist and an Accountant supporting our service division. The human resources function also will report to you. Currently, a contractor is overseeing accounting and finance, and you will work with them to transition functions in-house.

Relationships with customers, vendors and contractors are essential to our business model. We rarely pursue bids, and most work is negotiated, based in large part on relationships. You will take point on maintaining solid relationships with surety bonding and insurance vendors, and support the President in maintaining good relationships with customers and other external partners.

Your specific responsibilities will fall into four key areas:
  • Accounting.
  • Financial planning and analysis.
  • Cash management.
  • Risk management.
Note: this description is intended to give you a general overview of the position and is not an exhaustive listing of duties and responsibilities.

Other benefits include life insurance, a 401(k) plan and health reimbursement arrangement (HRA) that covers your medical deductible, co-pays, and coinsurance. We realize that there will be a learning curve as you come on board, but we'll also expect you to leverage your experience and expertise to start making contributions right away. In short order, you should become a trusted advisor to the leadership team, particularly the President. This will include not only transforming the data into useful information but also knowing when your advice will be most impactful.

In addition to providing higher-level thinking, this is a "player-coach" role, and you should be willing to "roll up your sleeves" to achieve your goals in a lean organization. You'll support company-wide efforts to implement greater structure and discipline. As you help manage change, you should leverage your leadership and interpersonal skills to influence and motivate others.

The pace is fast and stress can run high at times. You should be the stable "anchor" for your team in those circumstances, modeling a level-headed approach to working through it all. In general, as a leader, you should articulate common goals, clarify expectations, provide support and hold people accountable.
